Reading Tarot Cards for Love
One of the most common reasons people choose to consult the tarot is for guidance in their romantic relationships. Everyone wants to know whether destiny has a passionate romance in store for them, or whether that person they have a crush on thinks about them too. You would be surprised how many tarot readings I have been asked to perform that center around the question of love and relationships. But how accurate are the cards in predicting our romantic futures? In my experience, the usefulness of tarot cards is not in predicting exactly when a ‘tall mysterious stranger’ will appear to sweep us off our feet. Rather, we can use the cards to think deeply about what it is that we want and need in a potential relationship. Armed with this knowledge, any future romance has a better chance of being successful.
Read more about three cards that are essential to understanding our romantic predicaments and guiding ourselves toward happiness and fulfillment in love.
Two of swords – Many people come to the tarot seeking answers about things external to their own experience. “When will I find the right person? What will happen to me in relationships?” Oftentimes, the best advice the cards and reader can give is for the querent to take a step back and think about what it is that they want in a relationship. More often than not, relationship troubles are not the result of external forces (yes, people can be mean). When we go out looking for a solution to our problems without really knowing what it is that we are looking for, that’s when we not only risk hurting ourselves but others. The two of swords can symbolize a stalemate, being blinded and unwilling to move forward. More often though, the two of swords symbolizes the need to make a decision. A big decision or one that represents choosing one of two opposites. When this card appears in a reading it is good idea to think long and hard. The querent may have no clue yet that a decision is coming, but pay attention! This card is powerful. And yes, in a love related tarot reading the two of swords can symbolize the need to choose whether to stay in a relationship or leave it, in effect taking off the blindfold and moving along!
The Lovers — This card is an obvious choice, but not just because it deals broadly with romantic relationships. Like the three of cups, The lovers card might equally be termed the “lusty” card. The two naked figures depicted in the classic Rider Waite design are not just in love, they have the hots for each other. How often do we neglect the sexual side of our beings when trying to think rationally about a relationship? Attraction is a fundamental and basic human condition that plays a major role in our romantic pairings, and even in other parts of our lives (if you subscribe to psychoanalysts like Freud). Sexuality is also a major source of stress and disagreement in relationships, particularly when partners fail to communicate effectively. Drawing the lovers card in a spread can tell us that we need to communicate our needs and desires more clearly – both to ourselves and our partner. The lovers card can also symbolize a good match, an equal pairing, a harmonious relationship blessed by the angel above! Lucky are those that receive this card in the present and future positions of a tarot reading.
Two of Cups – It’s not all passion, all the time. On the other side of the spectrum we have relationships that are just as functional as there are exciting. The two of cups card depicts two people coming together in a shared commitment and partnership. Sort of like the “I do” part of the marriage vows, the two of cups stands for all of the daily things that need to be done to maintain a healthy relationship. This card suggests the need for opening ourselves up to others, learning to share both material and emotional resources, and truly loving someone for who they are. The rewards of cultivating this side of our relationships are many: trust, companionship, and fulfillment are among them.
